SDG Alliance -Blockchain Potential for Progress in Food Security

Blockchain technology is one tool that could improve future food systems policies, traceability, and the flow and success of these supply chains. Blockchain technology can enhance consumer trust, production speed, and product efficiency; things the food industry could use right now. Global food supply chain failure has become a catch phrase for supply systems malfunction.

To take a closer look at the status of the various application areas way beyond the well-quoted autonomous driving, the EU Tech Chamber (EUTECH) SDG Alliance organized a webinar on January 12, 2023. The topic under discussion was, “Blockchain Potential for Progress in Food Security”.

The webinar started off with a brief overview of the organization and a formal introduction of the panelists by Mr. Osama Ali, who is the new coordinator of the SDG Alliance.

The four panelists who participated in today’s event were:
·        Ms. Irena Rezec, Strategic Consultant, NFT & DLT Talent
·        Ms. Mirjana Ivanusa-Bezjak, Senior lecturer of Blockchain Technology
·        Dr Azam Pasha, CEO & Co-Founder of Maalexi.com
·        Ms. Penny Anderson, Data and Technology Director, SDG Changemakers

While addressing the webinar, the speakers focused on the importance of the knowledge and understanding of new Blockchain models for the employees associated with the food industry. They also discussed some challenges that are associated with food security. A few challenges were hunger & food waste, food safety, energy consumption, and weakness in management increasing mistrust.

Moreover, the speakers also identified some key stakeholders like farmers, researchers, regulatory bodies, financial institutions, etc., who should be in the Blockchain ecosystem. The lack of standards and regulatory support is also expected to restrain Blockchain’s value in the food industry.

We want to thank our respectable speakers for their informed insights on this much-needed topic. Moreover, special thanks to Mr. Osama Ali for moderating the webinar and distributing Tree-Certificates to the panelists.

Above all, sincere thanks to all our attendees – your comments, compliments, and questions. Stay tuned for our next SDGs Alliance webinar on February 09, 2023, about “Digital Initiatives to Ensure Equitable & Quality Education”.
