Climate change and urbanization pose excessive challenges – Sponge City is a concept of urban planning to collect and store rainwater and thermal energy in cities locally. Benefits of it are the improvement of the urban climate and promotion of the health of urban trees as well as the avoidance of flooding during heavy rain events. Furthermore, the usage of underground thermal energy storages (UTES) provides an essential part in solving the heating transition in cities.
