6 May – EU Tech Chamber Energy Council – Topic: Innovations for Energy-Efficient Cooling (SDG 7 & 9)

Nearly a third of all humans faces dangerous temperatures for more than 20 days a year. 12,000 deaths per annum are caused by severe heatwaves. Staying cool is a matter of health and productivity for us all. While there is a need to provide best access to cooling technologies to protect people against extreme heat, to keep vaccines stable and food & water fresh, we urgently need to rapidly scale up cooling solutions based on clean, decarbonised and efficient technologies. Otherwise, the more we cool, the more we heat the planet.

Only looking into the industry sector, heating and cooling represents approximately 75% of energy used, which accounts for more than 25% of the global final energy consumption. But it is also the household sector to play a crucial role in the energy transformation towards 100% renewables. Currently, renewable energy only accounts for approximately 13% of total final energy consumption in industry. Obviously, we need to rethink that our energy needs for cooling are reliably met by 100% renewable energy, and are accessible to all people.

Given that more and more households and companies in the industrial sector are now seeing the need to decarbonise their operations in all end-uses by switching from fossil fuels to renewables, how can we promote sustainable innovations for energy-efficient cooling? What is needed to implement already existing sustainable innovations and how can we further improve the performance and carbon footprint of our operations? How can we ensure that the people who need them most can have access to these technologies? In our discussion today, the Energy Council of the EU Tech Chamber brings together experts from Africa and Europe to share lessons learnt and to develop key recommendations in order to achieve the SDG 7 & 9 objectives.

Join our conversation during our Energy Council Digital Talk on Thursday, May 6th, 2021 at 09:00 -10:30 am CEST to explore the existing innovations for energy-efficient cooling and the best ways to implement them effectively in order to make our working and living conditions bearable. Our EU Tech Chamber Chairman Florian von Tucher and Director Energy Marcus Wiemann will join this talk and give the introductions.
