In the last 50 years, the number of people on this planet has more than doubled. While by the end of the century, will global population surpass 10 billion?
According to Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), the world population will likely peak in 2064 at around 9.7 billion people and fall to 8.8 billion by century’s end due to higher life expectancies, migration rates, and lower fertility rates.
By country, India moves up to the top with 1.09 billion and China will drop by almost half to 732 million. Led by Nigeria, Sub-Saharan Africa will continue to see growth. A look at the age structure, by 2100, over a quarter of the world or nearly 2.37 billion will be aged 65 years and above.
The environment, culture, politics, food supply, and demand, the undermined ability of some of the natural resources to replenish – everything is affected by the growth of population.
Complex projections on the number of global population, yet one thing is sure, the world we have is fixed in its size, but the population is getting bigger. The angles from which we can approach this problem are almost endless. Saving resources by raising the awareness and by acting now it is definitely one of many we can do.
