Goal 1: End poverty in all its forms everywhere

New research published by the UNU World Institute for Development Economics Research warns that the economic fallout from the global pandemic could increase global poverty by as much as half a billion people, or 8% of the total human population. It would be the first time in thirty years that poverty levels have increased globally.

More than 700 million people, or 10 per cent of the world population, still live in extreme poverty today. One out of five children lives in extreme poverty. Thus, ensuring social protection for anyone but especially children and other vulnerable groups is critical in reducing poverty.

The contribution of science and technology to end poverty has been significant. The provision of safe drinking water reduced deaths caused by water-borne diseases and health risks related to unsafe drinking water and improved hygiene. Your active engagement and care is needed to support transformational change in people’s lives and communities.
